Acting Minister of Finance Discussed National Transit Strategy With Ministry of Industry and Commerce

H.E Abdul Hadi Arghanidiwal, Acting Minister of Finance met with Mr. Ajmal Ahmadi, Acting Minister of Commerce and Industry at MOF compound, on April 22, 2020.

In this meeting, the parties shared their views on transit strategy, import and export tariffs, and addressed private sector problems at the boarders.

Mr. Ahmadi, Acting Minister of Industry and Commerce specified that he has drafted the National Transit Strategy and will share it with the High Economic Council for approval; it will go into effect after this approval. The success of this strategy is dependent on cooperation between these two entities, so keen review by both parties is required.

Acting Minister of Industry and Commerce stated that setting import and export tariffs need common efforts from MoF, MoIC and the private sector. Tariffs should be set based on economic analysis to facilitate economic growth in the country; all the costumes should be set up in a manner that private sector pay 100 percent of import and export tariffs according to the law.

All the discussion points in this meeting are important; we will support the National Transit Strategy and will share our views in High Economic Council to have a robust strategy based on economic analysis and regional connections as Afghanistan is connecting South and Central Asia, Acting Minister of Finance added. Acting Minister of Finance indicated that there is a committee for setting import and export tariffs and it is composed of different governmental entities; any changes in the tariffs should be based on economic analysis. MoF will support MoIC in technical aspects.

H.E Arghandiwal stated that in supporting the private sector, the first digital scale which is connected to SCADA system will be installed at the Torkham border. We will provide the same facility in other borders as well; private sector needs to conform their imports and exports to the regulations.
